J. G. Wooten School was also known as Second Ward. It was the first school to be added to the Paris system after 1884. Also known as the Sherman Street School, the property originally belonged to George W. Wright. The first building for Second Ward was erected about 1894.
Second Ward was located at the northeast corner of West Sherman and Park Place (now 5th SW). In 1922 a new brick building was begun facing 4th SW and in 1930 the school was renamed in honor of Paris Superintendent J. G. Wooten on his 75th birthday. The school closed in the spring of 1964 due to decreasing enrollment and students were transferred to Graham School.
