Crockett Junior High (now Crockett Intermediate School) opened in 1963. The school was built for students living on the east side of Paris. The first students were 7th and 8th graders from the elementaries and 9th graders from the high school. The school's first principal was Felix "Hoot" Gibson. The school was named in honor of the legendary hero of the Alamo, Davy Crockett. Its original mascot name was the Volunteers with school colors of orange and white. That changed in the early 1990's following a district-wide consolidation when the school became the Crockett Wildcats.
