Students will have four (4) major book reports due this school year – 1 for each 9 week period. Students will be given a rubric and an outline of requriements that must be met for each project. These projects are to be student-directed: I want your child to be as creative as they want. I want them to explore the book, its world, characters, development, plot, etc. Students will also be required to present their projects to the class in order to develop their speaking and elocution skills.
In addition to these independent book projects, students will also be working on collaborative projects, unit projects and an ongoing student scrapbook that they will be adding to every 3 weeks.
I know this may seem like a lot, but I believe projects such as those we will utilize in the classroom this year are a much better gauge of student-mastery than pen-and-paper tests, although some of those will be requried. I also want your child to develop as an independent learner and critical thinker by challenging them and giving them an opportunity to explore their interests and skills.
